Synopsis
Young and fiercely sensitive, the artist Werther retreats to the idyllic countryside seeking tranquility and communion with nature. Wandering through sunlit hills and peaceful valleys, he finds himself enchanted by rustic life and renewed by solitary reflection. But his newfound peace shatters the moment he meets Charlotte, a radiant and compassionate young woman whose gentle spirit captivates him entirely. Werther falls deeply, irrecoverably in love. Yet an insurmountable shadow looms over his devotion: Charlotte is already betrothed to Albert, a steady, upright gentleman whom she respects. Unable to tear himself away, Werther enters an agonizing emotional orbit around the couple. As friendship deepens and unexpressed passion burns ever hotter, his ecstatic joy gives way to suffocating torment. Lyrical and deeply intimate, this classic tale captures the intoxicating heights of romantic adoration and the devastating ache of a heart consumed by a love it cannot possess.
Translated by R. Dillon Boylan.
