Synopsis
When the sudden death of her father leaves young Cytherea Graye and her brother destitute, she must navigate a world suddenly devoid of security. Forced to earn her own living, Cytherea accepts a post as lady’s maid to the imperious and enigmatic Miss Cytherea Aldclyffe, an eccentric heiress with mysterious ties to her late father’s past. Though Cytherea’s heart belongs to the gentle young architect Edward Springrove, their budding romance is thwarted by family obligations and hidden engagements. Desperate to secure medical care for her ailing brother, Cytherea finds herself ensnared by Miss Aldclyffe’s scheming and courted by the alluring yet sinister new estate steward, Aeneas Manston. Suspenseful, atmospheric, and emotionally charged, this dark Victorian melodrama pulls readers into a web of obsessive passion, tangled identities, and perilous secrets where every choice demands a sacrifice.
