The Man Upstairs and Other Stories
The Man Upstairs and Other Stories
In a drafty Chelsea studio, ambitious young composer Annette Brougham is furiously hammering out a waltz when infuriating thumps echo from the ceiling. Bristling with indignation, she marches upstairs to confront the unseen brute, only to find Alan Beverley, a delightfully modest, mop-headed painter cheerfully botching a portrait of a child and a cat. Rather than trading blows, the two struggling artists strike up an immediate, sparkling camaraderie fueled by mutual sympathy and self-deprecating wit. As Annette confides her battles with stone-hearted music publishers and maddening pupils, Alan offers a charming pact of neighborly solidarity. Across this delightful collection, P. G. Wodehouse weaves a tapestry of bohemian romance, eccentric mix-ups, and sunny misadventures. Filled with buoyant optimism, effervescent dialogue, and tender humor, each story showcases young dreamers navigating art, ambition, and the unpredictable antics of love.
The Phantom 'Rickshaw, and Other Ghost Stories
The Phantom 'Rickshaw, and Other Ghost Stories
In the sun-bleached hill stations and shadowy outposts of British India, rational Victorian confidence collides with the uncanny. In the chilling title tale, Jack Pansay callously casts aside his former lover, Agnes Keith-Wessington, pursuing a bright future with his new fiancée, Kitty Mannering. But after Agnes dies of a broken heart, her spectral rickshaw and its silent, liveried bearers return to haunt the winding mountain roads of Simla, driving Jack toward the brink of madness. Alongside this harrowing descent into guilt and obsession, Rudyard Kipling crafts unforgettable encounters with the unknown, from living nightmares in desolate craters to grand colonial ambitions gone terribly awry. Blending psychological dread, eerie atmospheres, and biting social observation, these masterfully suspenseful tales reveal that the darkest terrors are often the sins that refuse to stay buried.

The Yellow Wallpaper
The Yellow Wallpaper
Confined to the upstairs nursery of an isolated colonial estate, a young woman struggles under the suffocating care of her physician husband, John. Prescribing absolute rest, fresh air, and complete inactivity for her nervous depression, John forbids her from working, socializing, or even keeping a private journal. Left alone with her restless thoughts, the narrator becomes consumed by the room’s decaying, sickly yellow wallpaper. Its chaotic, sprawling patterns and grotesque shapes seem to writhe with unspoken secrets, provoking an unsettling fixation that deepens by the day. As her isolation sharpens her senses, she begins to detect a shadowy presence trapped behind the paper’s lurid twists and faded bars. Chilling, intimate, and deeply atmospheric, this masterwork captures a fragile mind pushed toward the brink by forced silence and domestic confinement.
