Archibald Hope, a struggling young artist, is desperately in love with Lucy Kendal, but her eccentric stepfather, Professor Braddock, demands a steep price for his blessing. Obsessed with the secrets of ancient embalming, the professor insists on acquiring a priceless Peruvian relic: a royal mummy swathed in green bandages. Determined to win Lucy’s hand, Archie sacrifices his meager savings to finance the expedition, dispatching an assistant to Malta to fetch the prize. Yet when the ominous crate finally arrives at their estate beside the desolate Essex marshes, eager anticipation gives way to horror.
