Synopsis
In a dingy corner of New York’s East Side, life revolves around the pawnshop of the enigmatic Duchess—a legendary fence whose dark house harbors thieves, schemers, and outcasts. Among them is proud, willful Maggie Carlisle, an eighteen-year-old caught between the squalor of the waterfront and the allure of high-rolling city life. When the Duchess’s handsome grandson, Larry Brainard, is released from Sing Sing, the local underworld buzzes with anticipation. Maggie's father, Old Jimmie, and flashy Broadway crook Barney Palmer are eager to pull Larry back into lucrative heists, but Larry fails to appear, leaving everyone guessing at his true game. Meanwhile, an eccentric mechanic turned painter watches from the attic, observing the restless souls below. Atmospheric, tense, and rich with streetwise grit, this crime drama plunges readers into a shadowy world where hardened criminals, sudden temptations, and buried loyalties collide in a storm of ambition and danger.
