Synopsis
On Benefit Street in historic Providence, Rhode Island, stands an antiquated colonial house shunned by all who know its morbid history. For generations, tenants wither within its decaying walls, their health and vitality insidiously drained away by an unseen affliction. While practical neighbors dismiss the dwelling as merely damp and unsanitary, dark folklore hints at a deeper, malignant blight festering in the earth-floored cellar. There, grotesque phosphorescent fungi sprout in the gloom, and shifting mold patterns mimic the contorted outline of a human corpse. Armed with ancestral records and scientific curiosity, a young investigator and his antiquarian uncle, Dr. Elihu Whipple, resolve to uncover the source of the persistent pestilence. What begins as a scholarly inquiry into local legend rapidly plunges them into a chilling confrontation with an ancient, subterranean dread lurking beneath the foundations.
