Synopsis
In a cozy country cottage resting under the shadow of a grand manor, sensible elder sister Margaret Lambton and her exuberant seventeen-year-old sister Prue tally the humorous debts and dues of living alongside high society. When an invitation arrives for Prue's very first dinner party at the Big House, the sisters are swept into a sparkling world of fashionable guests, scandalous aristocrats, and lively flirtations. Among the glittering company are the disreputable yet captivating Lady Betty, the elusive Freddy Ducane—whose charming presence threatens Prue's youthful peace of mind—and enigmatic newcomer John Talbot. As youthful innocence encounters the tangled web of adult sentiment, gossip, and social intrigue, romantic illusions are tested by the unpredictable whims of affection. Brimming with Rhoda Broughton’s trademark acerbic wit, spirited banter, and keen emotional observation, this novel captures the tender, exhilarating perils of growing up and falling in love.
