Synopsis
Inside a shadowy wilderness cabin, a stern coroner convenes a midnight inquest over the mutilated corpse of Hugh Morgan, a solitary woodsman. Seven silent jurors wait in the gloom as William Harker, a visiting city writer, steps forward to give sworn testimony about his companion's gruesome death. Harker relates a harrowing tale of a morning hunt, describing how an unseen, predatory force violently flattens the wild oats and charges from the chaparral. Though Morgan fights desperately against this terrible assailant, no creature is visible, leaving only savage wounds upon his broken body. With Morgan's worn diary hinting at a monstrous entity that defies the natural order, the investigation plunges into profound dread and mystery. Ambrose Bierce delivers a chilling masterpiece of horror that explores the terrifying boundaries of human perception.
