Synopsis
Young and sheltered Lucy Honeychurch arrives in Florence under the prim, watchful eye of her spinster cousin Charlotte Bartlett. Expecting the intoxicating beauty of Italy, Lucy instead finds herself trapped in a stuffy boarding house filled with pretentious English tourists and denied a bedroom overlooking the River Arno. When an unconventional, free-thinking fellow guest named Mr. Emerson and his brooding son, George, bluntly offer to swap rooms, Lucy's carefully ordered Edwardian sensibilities begin to unravel. Amid the sun-drenched piazzas and vibrant hills of Tuscany, George's unfiltered passion awakens desires Lucy has long repressed. Caught between the stifling decorum of respectable English society and the uninhibited truth of her own heart, Lucy must decide whether to retreat into safe conformity or dare to embrace an authentic life. Forster crafts a sparkling, witty, and deeply romantic comedy of manners.
