Synopsis
Trapped in a sterile marriage of social convenience to an ambitious French politician, the elegant Madame Thérèse Martin-Bellème drifts through Parisian high society with a detached heart. Even her discreet dalliance with a dependable lover fails to stir her deeper desires. Yearning for genuine feeling, Thérèse escapes to the sunlit, artistic refuge of Florence, the city of the red lily. Amid Tuscany’s intoxicating beauty and a bohemian circle of poets and aristocrats, she encounters Jacques Dechartre, a gifted and intensely passionate sculptor. What begins as an intellectual spark quickly flares into an all-consuming romance that reawakens her soul. Yet as their intimacy deepens against the backdrop of Renaissance palaces, obsessive jealousy and the lingering shadows of past obligations threaten to poison their newfound ecstasy. Anatole France weaves a sophisticated, psychologically penetrating portrait of desire, vulnerability, and the perilous boundaries between love and possession.
