Synopsis
In the suffocating summer heat of Saint Petersburg, destitute former student Rodion Raskolnikov paces his stifling garret, consumed by an audacious and sinister obsession. Desperate, impoverished, and deeply alienated from society, he conceives a dangerous theory: exceptional individuals possess the right to transcend ordinary moral laws for a greater purpose. To prove his superiority and escape crushing debt, Raskolnikov plots the murder of an unscrupulous old pawnbroker. Yet when his reckless fantasy turns into brutal reality, he plunges into a feverish psychological nightmare of terror, paranoia, and unendurable guilt. As an astute investigator begins to circle and his own conscience fractures, Raskolnikov finds himself trapped in a harrowing battle between intellect and morality. Dark, gripping, and intensely atmospheric, this profound tale explores the frantic inner turmoil of a brilliant mind on the brink of collapse.
Translated by Constance Garnett.
