Synopsis
Gregor Samsa wakes up one dreary morning to discover an unimaginable nightmare: overnight, his body has transformed into a monstrous, armored vermin. Lying helpless in bed, his frantic mind does not dwell on the biological impossibility of his condition, but rather on his soul-crushing job as a traveling salesman and the looming terror of missing his morning train. As the sole provider shouldering his family’s mounting debts, Gregor desperately tries to maintain normalcy behind his locked bedroom door. Outside, his bewildered parents and anxious sister knock and plead, completely unaware of the grotesque reality awaiting them. When Gregor finally reveals himself, the claustrophobic household descends into shock, horror, and profound estrangement. Kafka masterfully weaves an atmosphere of bleak comedy, surreal absurdity, and devastating psychological dread, plunging readers into an unforgettable exploration of isolation, duty, and human alienation.
Translated by David Wyllie.
