Synopsis
On a rugged Kentucky farm in the 1920s, sixteen-year-old Ellen Gaddy navigates a world shaped by unyielding soil and relentless chores. While her tyrannical father, Anton, harbors lingering resentment over having daughters instead of sons, her frail mother retreats into shadow and religious piety. Lonely and longing for connection, Ellen pours her affection into her animals, particularly a young expectant goat, and finds solace in folk songs left behind by a departed companion. Yet beneath her quiet endurance lies a fierce, obstinate spirit yearning for a life beyond drudgery and family estrangement. As the changing seasons bring both harsh realities and the stirrings of womanhood, Ellen must confront the boundaries of her insular world and her own awakening desires. Rich with agrarian detail and poetic melancholy, this moving drama captures the ache of youth bound to the inexorable cycles of the land.
